Workshop Description
Have you ever wondered: How do I develop cultural competence? What must I do to deepen my understanding of cultural differences? How do I move from cultural awareness to cultural competency? This workshop may be for you if such questions crossed your mind. In an ever changing work-place, relying on holistic understanding of cultural competencies allows us to work more effectively with a culturally diverse college community.

Workshop Objective
Participants will be able to gauge their own understanding of cultural competence and identify strategies to move from awareness to competency. Participants will also be able to examine issues of identity and how these identities are negotiated in order to build stronger working relationships.

Workshop Facilitator
Amanuel Malik. Aman is a native of Eritrea. He is passionate about inspiring college students to be self-directed learners and reach their highest potential. He has been working as an Advisor for the Student Support Services TRIO Program at Monroe Community College since 2006. Aman has an extensive background in helping both native and non-native students to communicate effectively, develop leadership skills, make appropriate career choices, and work independently and collaboratively. He holds a B.A. from St. John Fisher College, M.A. from St. Bernard’s Institute, and he is a doctoral candidate at Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota (ABD). Aman believes advisors/counselors play a critical role in advancing the mission of higher education by helping students adjust not only to a new academic environment, but also a new social and cultural context. In doing so, they model culturally competent behavior.

RSVP by Monday, November 6th at RAC Advising Workshop – Fall 2017. (Requests for accommodations must be received by Monday, October 30th.)
